Mother’s Day returns on Sunday 22nd March this year – better have those breakfast in bed plans at the ready!
Did you know the origins of the day are actually tied up with returning to the church you were baptised? During the 16th century, people would return to their “mother church” on the fourth Sunday on Lent, which was either the church where you was baptised, your local parish church, or the nearest cathedral which was the mother church of all the parish churches in the local area. Over the years, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given the day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members – which was one of the few times in the year when entire families would meet. Children would reportedly pick wildflowers along the way to church either to place in the church or to give to their mothers – and eventually this evolved into the now secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers on Mother’s Day, which is still the fourth Sunday of Lent.
The traditions of Mother’s Day do seem to revolve around tasty treats throughout the day – from scrumptious breakfast in bed to a family lunch or dinner!
