Britain’s love affair with anything related to ‘The Great British Bake Off’ continues apace – last year Britain spent an extra £150m on cakes and biscuits, which is a whopping 80 million kilos of the sweet stuff! The cake market has seen a 6.3% increase in value and a 4.9% increase in volume in the past year – we can have our cake and eat it too!
Snacking and fragmented eating may be a reason for this increase – especially as cakes and biscuits are increasingly packaged in on the go formats, and with an increasing amount boasting health claims and centering around fruit and vegetable inclusions. Nostalgia is also a driving force in this sector – with Brexit now on our doorsteps and other political-economic worries ongoing, consumers are seeking comfort in another slice of cake.
