The countdown to Christmas has started – and so has the SQF Advent Calendar! Every day we’ll bring you either a fact of the day or a festive recipe card, so keep visiting our website and follow us on social media to see what we’re up to this festive season!
It’s the tenth day on our advent calendar – and it wouldn’t be the run up to Christmas if there weren’t a few mince pies keeping us going!
Mince pies used to be filled filled with meat, such as lamb, and were first made in an oval shape to represent the manger that Jesus slept in as a baby, with the pastry top representing his swaddling clothes. Some bakers even created a pastry baby Jesus to decorate their pies!
A tradition stretching back to the Middle Ages states that if you eat a mince pie on every one of the Twelve Days of Christmas (25th December to 6th January), you will have good luck for the next year!
