It’s the twelfth day on our advent calendar – no Christmas dinner would be complete without a slice of Christmas Cake and a slice of Wensleydale cheese!
Christmas Cake as we know it is an English tradition that began its life as plum porridge. People ate this porridge on Christmas Eve as a way to recuperate after a day of fasting – dried fruit, spices and honey were soon added to the porridge mixture to add more flavour, and the Christmas Pudding was born!
In the 16th century, oatmeal was removed from the original recipe for Christmas Pudding, with butter, wheat flour and eggs being added to make it more of a boiled plum cake. Richer families of the time began making fruit cakes with marzipan for Easter – and at Christmas, they made a similar cake using seasonal dried fruit and spices which came to be our modern Christmas Cake.
