Jackfruit has been the next new ingredient this year, with the fruit being used across savoury and sweet recipes to cater for vegetarian and vegan diets. The jackfruit tree originates from South Asia, and in a single year can produce as many as two hundred fifty fruits. That’s a lot of tacos to munch up!
Many refer to the jackfruit tree as a ‘wonder tree’ because every part of it has its own use – the fruit is consumed as food, the leaves are fed to livestock, the tree and branches are valued for the manufacture of wood products and the roots are utilized as medicine. In fact, extracts from the jackfruit tree can be used to treat fever, asthma and diarrhea – all the more reason to keep eating jackfruit!
