The countdown to Christmas has started – and so has the SQF Advent Calendar! Every day we’ll bring you either a fact of the day or a festive recipe card, so keep visiting our website and follow us on social media to see what we’re up to this festive season!
It’s the sixth day on our advent calendar – Happy Saint Nicholas Day! Saint Nicholas Day is the day which traditionally celebrates St Nicholas leaving good children presents in Europe – traditionally he leaves them in the children’s shoes, which is where we got the tradition of leaving our stockings out for Father Christmas!
Making those lists (and checking them twice) definitely requires a strong cup of tea and a piece of moreish, traditional gingerbread – for the perfect Christmas gingerbread it has to be lebkuchen!
The modern incarnation of lebkuchen was first baked by 13th century by monks residing in Franconia, Germany – which led to the nearby Nüremburg becoming the biggest exporter of quality lebkuchen, which is still the case today. In fact, the lebkuchen was so good that it was reportedly used as currency at one point!
The actual name lebkuchen reportedly derives from the the Latin word libum, which was flat dough offered during church service. In the Middle Ages, monks and churchgoers ate Lebkuchen-style baked goods at Christmas and Easter, accompanied by strong beer as a source of sustenance during times of fasting.
